HHA Demographics
This hospital-based Medicare-certified HHA, located in the upstate region of South Carolina, provided care for 1,869 patients (unduplicated) age 18 or older for October 1, 2008, through September 30, 2009. Fifty-five percent of the patients were age 65 years or older, 7% were less than 40. The agency experienced a 6% increase of patients age 65 years or older from the previous year. A majority of patients (79%) were discharged from an ACH within 14 days before the start of home health. The top diagnosis category was circulatory system diseases (82%). Respiratory system diseases were a top five diagnosis category also. Medicare was the primary payer for services, accounting for 89% of patient service revenue. The percentage of patients accessing urgent, unplanned medical care was higher than the national and state average in the year prior to telemonitoring. For October 2006 through September 2007, the percentage of patients requiring urgent unplanned medical care was 24% compared to a national and state percentage of 21% and 22%, respectively. The percentage of patients admitted to the hospital for this same period was 26%, lower than the national and state percentage of 28% and 30%, respectively.
