Be aware you may need to change the seating arrangement in your classroom several times during the year. Even the best combinations of students can become weary of each other if they are together too long. You may also want to shift the configuration of the desks or tables in your room a few times during the year. These alteration can breathe new life into classroom combinations that have become tiresome and problematic. Remember, however, major changes in seating arrangements or room configuration can stir up a whirlwind of unwelcome problems. Students have a whole new group with whom to talk, flirt, or even argue. But if changing seats really seems necessary, do it during the last 10 minutes of class on a Friday . This will give students a few minutes to adjust to the change---and the whole weekend to accept the new arrangements. If you have students with special education needs in your classroom, you may want to consider strategic seating for them. Depending on their needs, you may want them seated near you, or you may want them next to a student who could help them with academic work when possible. It they have challenging behavior, you may want to seat them next to someone who can be a role model of appropriate behavior.
