This study cannot conclude that either public or private education is superior in this context. However, it can begin to delineate how they differ. Public schools in this study generally espouse a more traditional style of teaching (more teacher-directed, lecture based and whole-class instruction) while private schools tend to use more contemporary methods (more student-centered, inquiry based, small group and discussion based). Public schools are concerned with improving the teaching skills and strategies of their educators in general ways that will influence their teaching in all subjects, while private schools are more able to articulate the strategies that are best suited for teaching science and support professional development specific to teaching within the discipline while emphasizing integrative methods. Findings show that although public schools are better resourced with lab spaces, private schools are better resourced with other types of sciencematerials.
