The results obtained in this work showed that higher pretreatment temperatures resulted in the highest yields of both sugars and ethanol from steam-exploded elephant grass. Water washing after pretreatment was beneficial probably due to the removal of both hydrolysis and fermentation inhibitors that were generated during pretreatment. In future work, higher substrate concentrations will be used at low enzyme loadings to access the economic viability of this process and the possibility of producing cellulosic from elephant grass in large scale.
