The main criticism of home schooling centers on the issue of
socialization. Critics charge that home schooled children are
isolated from the outside world and are socially handicapped.
By being sheltered from the real world, children are seldom
presented with the opportunities to learn sorely needed social
interaction skills. More important, “it is not only socially desirable
but also an important part of education for children
to interact with their own age group” (Simmons 1994, 48).
Unless these children are exposed on a daily basis to the social
life found in public schools, they will lack the skills needed to
successfully adapt to real-life situations when they are older
