As we have discussed throughout this book, the work world is changing rapidly. The economic and social pressures brought to bear on organization affect the conduct of work and make it necessary for employees to serve larger strategic business needs. A generation ago employees were hired primarily to fill jobs that had specified KSAOs and tasks to be performed. Emphasis was placed on selection, finding the "round peg (the person) for the round hole (the job). Metaphorically speaking, today the shape of the hole is continuously changing, thereby weakening the meaning of a "job". One implication of this changing nature of work is that greater relative importance is placed on skill enhancement.
