A young Akha man in Kamphaeng Ngam related that when first came down to the city he worked for very low pay at a gas station. During the Few months of working in the gas station, he observed that ethnic objects sold well to tourists. He began to make frequent trips to his village to bring down ethnic artifacts to sell to shops which sold traditional objects to tourists. After some time he became a middleman, buying handicrafts not only from his own village but also from other ethnic groups throughout the North. He said that his case was the same as all the others who have migrated from the hills. A number of persons objected to this statement. They said that it was only true in his situation, or that of a very few others.
