It is calling a “Prang”. The principal prang of Wat Arun is about 172 years old.It took 5 years to build from 1842-1847. It has undergone restoration several times. It was built in the reign of King Rama II but the work just began a little before the king passed away. Then King Rama III kept on the construction to the end. Actually, we may say that it took four reigns (or four periods) to complete the temple as seen nowadays though the main construction was done in the reign of King Rama III.
This main prang is 67 meters high. It was built to cover the 16 meter old one that is not indicated when it was built but it was available previously in Ayutthaya period. The base of the main prang consists of four levels. Each level has a lot of bearers. At the first level there are surrounding plants The second level has Kinnon, the mythical beings half man half bird and Kinnaree the mythical half woman half bird standing alternatively with the demons above. At the third level, there are also Kinnon and Kinnaree with the monkeys above. And at the fourth level, there are also Kinnon and Kinnaree with Bhramas, the deities above. Above the level of Bhramas , there are four niches that have statues of Indra the God on Erawan the elephant. Above Indra there are the statues of Vishnu the God on Garuda the mythical bird. The topmost has a pinnacle and crown. Inside a niche of the corner prang, there is a statue of Vayu, the God of Wind.
