Divided Highways
Divided highways are roads divided into two or more roadways by barriers or a dividing section of no less than two feet in width. This applies whether the median is unpaved, bounded by curbs, or marked by double parallel lines or other road markings. You should always drive to the right of these dividers. Driving across one of these barriers is an infraction (21651, CVC). If you need to turn left and there is no opening in the barrier allowing you to cross legally, continue driving until you find an opening in the divider and where it is safe to make a U-turn. Then drive back up on the other side of the roadway and turn right.
