The procedures for conducting a systematic grounded theory design were first developed in the 1960s by two sociologists studying the terminally (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Corbin and Strauss (2008) formally described the procedures to conduct a systematic grounded theory design. Other researchers such as Glaser (1992) and Charmaz (2006) working with Bryant (2007) have advanced more flexible strategies for developing theories using grounded theory designs. The systematic and flexible designs for grounded theory are widely used in research today to develop theories related to important issues and problems.
