The character (or scenery) of a beach and its surrounding
area (hinterland) is one of five factors identified by Ergin,
Williams, and Micallef (2006) as being extremely important in
determining a successful beach holiday, which is one of the
major amenity uses of beaches. This ‘‘scenery’’ factor is broken
down into 26 parameters that contribute to the character of a
beach froman amenity point of view, and these include both (1)
physical parameters such as beach type, beach width, beach
colour, and beach slope and (2) human parameters such as
access type, the built and nonbuilt environment, disturbance/
noise, and seaweed. Parameters such as these also form the
basis of many beach rating and classification systems such as
those previously discussed.
