Self-concept according to Roy (2009) is the composite of beliefs and feelings that an individual
holds about him or herself at a given time. The components of the self-concept
mode are the physical self (including body sensation and body image), and the personal self
(self-consistency, self-ideal, and moral-ethical-spiritual self). Critical illness may affect the
critically ill’s self-concept. From the perspectives of the individual, the role function mode
focuses on the roles that the individual occupies in the society. The complexity, severity and
impact of critical illness on an individual frequently curtail the performance of roles in the
family, activities and employment. In the family, these roles relate to activities such as
earning a living, maintaining a place to live and child rearing (Roy, 2009). The entire family
is affected when a family member is in an ICU.
