What if I will tell you Mr. Aamir Khan is underrated?
1. Who among Bollywood stars created this Satyamev Jayate (TV series) or even came up close?
2. While rest of the 'stars' (Salmaan, Sanjay) make great news for all the wrong reasons, you'll find him sharing the stage with social activists like Medha Patkar or this guy Anna Hazare.
3. His movies on important issues.

4. Lagaan was only bollywood movie of last decade which came close to an Oscar.
5. Besides, did you know that he was awarded the Padma Shree in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan India's third highest Civil Honour in 2010 by the Government of India.
6. He is the Brand Ambassador of the government organised IEC campaign to raise awareness about malnutrition.
7. He is the UNICEF goodwill brand ambassador for India List of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors

Aamir is the king of underplay. If you are not careful, you would miss many of his acting cues and mistake him for an ordinary actor. Often we assume loudness of voice, display of intensity and forcefulness of emotions to be signs of great actor. Aamir generally shies away from such common theatrics. Consider this scene:
This scene appears in the movie "Mangal Pandey" where Mangal Pandey comes across a butcherhouse for cows which inspires him to cause the 1857 revolt. The video link to this scene is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F.... If you are a casual observer, you would watch Aamir standing in the butcherhouse doing practically nothing. However, if you really "see" the scene, you would notice the slight twinge of his nostrils. The rancid odor from butcherhouse is displayed by Aamir in a very,very subtle way. This is what makes Aamir one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema.
In the past bollywood actors shied away from adapting to their characters in movies. Shahrukh Khan remained Shahrukh Khan whether he was a lover or a villain. Amitabh Bachchan's Vijay was repeated throughout his career. It was Aamir who broke this trend by portraying realistic characters and delivering successful films.
He portrayed diverse roles and was able to get under the skin of his characters. He changed his style,lingo and even body language to convey the characters realistically, from a villager of 18th century in Lagaan to a Delhi-boy in Rang De Basanti.

I am not saying Aamir Khan is a bad actor. But I don't think he's as good as people say he is. We are prone to hero-worship. We can see that from the fan following that Salman and Shah Rukh have. Aamir is only slightly better.
Why do I think he is overrated?
He gets paid far more than actors much better than him.
He has not played a single role in any movie that stands up to an average performance by Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Irrfan Khan, Manoj Bajpai, Kay Kay Menon, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Boman Irani, Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, Deepak Dobriyal or Vijay Raaz.
He may have done Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots and Lagaan, but he hasn't done Gangs of Wasseypur, Gulaal, Satya, Salaam Bombay, Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi, Yeh Saali Zindagi, Maqbool, Bheja Fry, Mumbai Meri Jaan, or even Shor in the City, Omkara or Kaminey - all films which test an actor's capabilities to really understand and portray difficult characters. And mind you, all of these are mainstream films, not offbeat cinema, so don't tell me it's not a fair comparison.
Aamir's acting in his most testing films was also not anything spectacular. It was definitely good, but not spectacular. In 1947 Earth, Sarfarosh, Talaash his acting was at best stoic. He had the same expression throughout all the serious scenes in all 3 of those movies. (Note to self: Put up screenshots later.)
He was spectacular for the times in mainstream cinema when he did Andaz Apna Apna and Rangeela. And that was decades ago; he still hasn't been able to do better than that.
3 Idiots, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Dhobi Ghat, Dil Chahta Hai are all really good movies, among my all time favourites, but Aamir's acting in them is not what makes them so good for me.
Remember that he has also done lame crowd-pleasers like Ghajini, Fanaa, Ishq - so don't claim he doesn't do movies like the ones other superstars do.
He is an excellent entertainer and probably a really good person, but an overrated actor.
Oh, and he seems to lack humility. It appears as if he considers himself somehow (professionally and morally) superior to other actors. You may be better, but you don't show that off. Haven't we all heard stories of him overruling the director, of his autocratic ways of functioning, and his so-called perfectionism? I can't think of a single role in which he has come even close to perfection.
Needless to say, all views are personal.

He is neither underrated nor overrated. He is consistently giving moderate hits, hits and super hits. His choice of movies are awesome.
He is a good actor. He acted in variety of movies and played all kind of roles. If you consider other actors of his time and fame, most of them stick to what they know and what they are specially meant for. But he is the one who took more risk in his roles.
A 40+ actor, who had 8 packs and beefy looks in one movie(Gajini) and within next 365 days, he acted as a college student.(3 idiots). That shows his dedication for his work. He is both hard and smart worker.
Why some people think he is overrated :
People mentioned about satyamev jayate and all other social activities but still, he don't have social charm like other. He never involved much on social functions or award functions. He is not a great public speaker. He won't show off much about himself. But as a star, that is needed to establish himself to mass.
Why most people think he is underrated :
Since he acted in variety of roles and take risk at most of his opportunities, most of people think he didn't got the height what he really deserves. This holds true for Kamal hassan as well. But this is not true always.
Kamal Hassan and Aamir khan are still in business because they acted in different roles. If they didn't chose this path, they wont get the fame like they are now.
Expectation :
expectation are the main reason why they are overrated at some point and underrated at some point. People expectation varies from person to person, When it comes to Aamir like actor, we expect a lot. if he cant full-fill those height of expectation, we blame him. For example, his recent movie talaash. He don't have a big role in that movie. He is one among them in that story. But people always expect their hero to be exceptional than any other human being. Dabaang 2 released at the same time and got good reviews, even though it's completely illogical than talaash. But people didn't expect anything other than salmaan's maja in dabang and they enjoyed it as a masala movie. In contrast they expect a lot from Aamir and movie is more of a flop even though it's 99% better than dabaang...
Sometimes, he is underrated, sometimes he is overrated, but when compared to his competitors. I would say he is more of an underrated actor rather than overrated.

He is an excellent entertainer and probably a really good person, but an overrated actor.
Oh, and he seems to lack humility. It appears as if he considers himself somehow (professionally and morally) superior to other actors. You may be better, but you don't show that off. Haven't we all heard stories of him overruling the director, of his autocratic ways of functioning, and his so-called perfectionism? I can't think of a single role in which he has come even close to perfection.

He is a good actor. He acted in variety of movies and played all kind of roles. If you consider other actors of his time and fame, most of them stick to what they know and what they are specially meant for. But he is the one who took more risk in his roles.
A 40+ actor, who had 8 packs and beefy looks in one movie(Gajini) and within next 365 days, he acted as a college student.(3 idiots). That shows his dedication for his work. He is both hard and smart worker.
Why some people think he is overrated :
People mentioned about satyamev jayate and all other social activities but still, he don't have social charm like other. He never involved much on social functions or award functions. He is not a great public speaker. He won't show off much about himself. But as a star, that is needed to establish himself to mass.
Why most people think he is underrated :
Since he acted in variety of roles and take risk at most of his opportunities, most of people think he didn't got the height what he really deserves. This holds true for Kamal hassan as well. But this is not true always.
Kamal Hassan and Aamir khan are still in business because they acted in different roles. If they didn't chose this path, they wont get the fame like they are now.

Sometimes, he is underrated, sometimes he is overrated, but when compared to his competitors. I would say he is more of an underrated actor rather than overrated.

As an actor, I would say YES
Aamir's acting in his most testing films was also not anything spectacular. It was definitely good, but not spectacular. In 1947 Earth, Sarfarosh, Talaash his acting was at best stoic. He had the same expression throughout all the serious scenes in all 3 of those movies. (Note to self: Put up screenshots later.)
He was spectacular for the times in mainstream cinema when he did Andaz Apna Apna and Rangeela. And that was decades ago; he still hasn't been able to do better than that.
3 Idiots, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Dhobi Ghat, Dil Chahta Hai are all really good movies, among my all time favourites, but Aamir's acting in them is not what makes them so good for me.
