Weight loss in litchi fruit after harvest occurs primarily due to rapid loss of moisture from pericardia tissues. Moisture loss leads to development of micro-cracks in the fruit pericardia which progressively move inwards up to the emphysematous mesomorph of the fruit (Barman et al., 2014).These micro-cracks accentuate further moisture loss, pathogen attack and rapid browning of the pericarp(Underhill and Simmons, 1993).
