Once thicknesses and drawing order are sorted out, you can focus on style. If the road is symbolized with a line edge, otherwise known as “cased line,” this can be broken at intersections to provide visual continuity. Cased symbols are usually drawn with a light color in the interior of the road line feature and a darker color for the outline of the road line feature. If this rule is reversed, the road will not look as if it has width or dimension and instead will appear as if it were highlighted. Road labels are placed inside a cased symbol. A darker line within the casing can provide center‑line realism. Casing is not recommended for scales above 1:100,000 (for these, use a regular thin line for major arterials). Directionals (arrows) can also appear within the line and are usually used for major arterials or one‑way city streets.
