perth is themost remote city in the world and the start of my 2700-miie train journey to sydney. the areavbetween perth and kalgoorlie the frist stop frist on my trip is known as the golden outback and is one of the driest places on earth kalgoorlie itself is the gold-mining capital of australia and is a living museum you can even explore an old ming while your there
between kalgoorlie and port augusta the india pacific train travels through the nullarbor plain on the longest straight piece of railway track in the world there are no buildings no people no roads and no plants just a rocky sandy desert as nullarbor means no trees in latin it is a very good name you may think this part from my window i saw exotic kangaroos and a rare great wedge-tailed eagle with a wingspan of two meters
port augusta is known as the crossroads of australia because the north-south and the east-west trains stop here from port augusta you can see the flinders ranges one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth when the english explorer matthew flinders arrived in the late 1800s he thought he had discovered a river leading to a great inland sea unfortunately he was 120 million years too late and what was once a sea is today just salt plains from here the train goes on to adelaide the last stop before its final destination sydney
