1. If the student has completed the washing the face lesson (ADT 68), have him or her perform that task prior to beginning this lesson. If the student is dependent or needs assistance in face washing, physically assist him or her in performing this task. Physically assist the student in the drying process.
2. Have the student identify (by pointing or using words) the towel that will be used in this task. If a paper towel dispenser is used, the task may need to be broken down into smaller parts.
3. Repeat Step 1, reducing physical guidance to step-by-step gestural and verbal cues for touching the towel to the sides of the face.
4. After success in Step 3, proceed to full-face drying to include covering the eyes. If difficulties are encountered, a game involving covering the eyes could make this easier.
5. Repeat Sap 3, reducing gestural cues to just verbal step-by-step requests.
6. Repeat Step 4, using only a total-task verbal request: "(Name), please dry your face."
7. Depending on the specific item used (cloth or paper towel), guide the student through the process of hanging up the towel or throwing away the paper towel. Reduce guidance needed until this aspect can be independently performed.
