A major study on productivity differences was carried out by the McKinsey Global
Institute, Mckinsey and Company’s economics think tank, in 1998.10 It used output per
hour worked to measure labour productivity; this is a better measure since it removes the
effects of increases in the number of hours worked. The results are summarised in Table 8.5.
