Also, the young person is likely to experience a closer connection with the counsellor through this mutual sharing and self-disclosure about something of common interest. Consequently, the climate in the counselling room will change. A friendly and relaxing conversation will take place which will enable the young person to regain energy, and join more effectively with the counsellor. After having such a conversation, it is easy for the counsellor to help the young person return to addressing an important issue. This can be done by using a transitional question such as, ‘Earlier’ we were talking about...would you like to tell me more about that?’
As counsellor of young people we should not be worried if at times a counselling session becomes an enjoinable chat about irrelevancies. This may help establish a good relationship.
