People’s livelihood and culture are inextricably linked to the climate. For Japanese the changing seasons have always been an essential element of life and its enjoyment – the cherry blossoms in spring, the colourful leaves in autumn and the round of seasonal delicacies on the table. So reports in recent years of abnormal weather around the world and of unusually high temperatures and heavy rains in Japan cause some concern. But while the term climate change has become familiar to everyone, do Japanese fully appreciate the possible effects of global warming and the impact it could have on their whole way of life? This publication aims to increase understanding of the phenomenon of global warming and point out that individuals can play an active role in combating it. Will we be able to continue life as normal on a beautiful green planet or will our environment turn to one of desolation? This is a decision in which each one of us can play a part.
