If task performance is deemed Independent or Not Applicable, the examiner should place a check mark in the appropriate column; otherwise, he or she should leave the item blank. Because this is a positively oriented assessment, the examiner should emphasize that the affective domain (AFF items) should also be viewed in a positive manner. For example, if Item AFF 5 (Does not hurt others) is scored as Independent, it would mean that the person has basically mastered the concept and practice of not causing harm to other people. If a respondent is uncertain how to answer a specific item, the examiner should refer to the behavioral objective listed in the corresponding sample lesson plan in this book to clarify the intended outcome. The examiner should also be aware if the respondent is tiring or not giving careful thought to an answer. If this is the case, it may be necessary to conduct multiple sessions to score the whole assessment.
