Relaxation allows the body/mind to quieten and focus inward. One can retreat mentally from one's surroundings, still thought, relax muscles, and maintain a state of relaxation, and pain. Regardless of the approach (use of meditation, yoga, muscle and breathing exercises, hypnosis, prayer, and other forms of stress management), the end result of the relaxation response is a movement of the person toward calmness, balance, and healing. The guideline for relaxation are found in Exhibit 2.1.
