3. Evaluation of Sample Results
a. The evaluation includes calculating the sample deviation rate and the achieved upper deviation limit.
b. The sample deviation rate is the number of deviations observed divided by the sample size.
1) This rate is the best estimate of the population deviation rate.
c. The achieved upper deviation limit (UDL) is based on the sample size and the number of deviations discovered. Auditors use standard use standard tables to calculate the UDL. In Table 1 below (adapted from an Audit Practice Release of the AICPA), the intersection of the sample size and the number of deviations indicates the achieved upper deviation limit.
