This study found that the ICU experience for all participants was interdependence. The
nurses, patients, and family members are one or intertwined. Adaptation in the ICU, as experienced
by the participants from three categories, integrates family as a unit, physical care
and/or comfort, physiological care and psychosocial support resulting in transformation.
The themes not only illuminated the RAM modes but also the concept of transformation
as the highest goal of adaptation.’.
