The dependent variables are called PRIVATE
OWNERSHIP, COMPETITION GOOD, and
INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY all of which are
measured at the individual level and range from 1 to
10. A large value on one of the dependents indicates
that the respondent is favourable towards the aspect
of privatization in question. Low values indicate
support for government ownership and/or control,
or, for the second variable, that competition is
harmful. (For the exact wording of the three variables,
see the Appendix.) Using principal component analysis,
I found these measures to have the same underlying
construct or factor. Yet, when testing the
reliability of an aggregated public versus private
measure, it proved to be too low to justify its inclusion
in the analysis.
