With the looming July 1, 2016 effective date for the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) verified gross mass (VGM) requirements, MOL (America) Inc. is closely engaged with our alliance partners, the Ocean Carrier Equipment Management Association (OCEMA), and our terminal service providers to ensure that all procedures are in order and aligned with the terminal weighing approach for VGM along with the use of existing shipment information for on-dock rail moves.
In the meantime, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has advised stakeholders that authorities should “adopt a practical and pragmatic approach when verifying compliance with the requirements of SOLAS regulations…for a period of three months.” Please refer to MSC.1/Circ.1548.
Although considerable work remains to be done, MOL is confident that cargo will continue to move smoothly during this transition period. Therefore, please be assured that cargo booked with MOL will not be hindered by the implementation of the SOLAS VGM requirements.
We will provide further updates when they become available. If you have any questions, please contact your salesperson or the MOL (America) Inc. Shipment Management Center at 1-800-449-7575. Thank you for your patience. As always, we appreciate your business.
