External influences from India, China and the Middle East, in particular, also served to sharpen the distinctions between the upland and lowland communities of the region, and served to separate Sinicized northern Vietnam from the rest of the Theravada Buddhist mainland states, and these in turn from the Muslim-dominated archipelago.
