Dalquest (1954), one of the pioneers at using the mist net for bats, has published an account of his collecting in tropical Mexico. His article should be consulted as it gives method and procedures for collecting bats in great detail. Dalquest concludes that bat netting does not give a complete picture of the bat fauna in an area, as many species taken by shotgun are not in the nets. The taken reverse of this isalso ture, however, bat nets should not be placed in the “dead air” of caves or buildings but rather in the open. He further suggests that nets should be placed close to the ground. As many species of bats fly between 1 and 2 feet above ground. Bat nets should be tended regularly and should not be left out overnight in the tropics. Dalquest recommends that notes be taken as to the time bats are caught in, the nets , as there seems to be a definite correlation between the feeding habits of bats and the time of their activity.
