I found passive acceptance in my students. I found 10 and 1 i-year-old children telling me that they were not as “ready” or as “advanced” as other children when I asked them why they thought they were in the “low” reading group. Other answers included “because I’m not that good a reader”, “because I need stories that aren’t that hard”. etc. There seemed to be a prevailing (and in my mind. perverse) belief that they were in the low group because they deserved to be there.
