Before the study, the average length of stay for patients with an alcohol-related diagnosis was 7.5 days. Following intense training in parallel with the introduction of GMAWS, this fell to 5.8 days in 2009-10. This equates to a reduction of 23%. Before the study and the introduction of the guide- line, 17 violent incidents were recorded in the same period for the previous 12 months. This fell to seven during the study period.
