This study provides the first evidence that there is a difference in the levels o f PA, as measured by steps taken during PE classes, among young children (nine years and
younger) falling within different BMI percentile categories. Determining effective ways to maximize PE levels of children who are OW /obese is important. Educators should structure PE lessons to engage children from all BMI categories in moderate to vigorous activity for at
least 50% o f class time. Future research should focus on identifying the barriers for participation in PE by children in the overweight and obese categories.
