It is important for the emergency nurse to “look beneath the surface” when confronted with possible traffickers. These characters are often selected by criminal organizations because of their appeal to potential victims. Because they are extremely skilled at gaining the trust of victims, they are talented at deceiving health care professionals. The nurse must be alert for signs that may indicate traffickers are in total control. Suspicions should arise when persons accompanying possible victims insist on staying close by and speaking for these individuals, even when the potential victims are directly questioned by the nurse and can speak the native language. Traffickers often share the same nationality as their victims, making them seem like ideal persons to interpret and handle all of the victims' important documents, such as passports, birth certificates, student visas, or other documents of identity. However, the nurse must understand that these are red-flag behaviors that should raise the index of suspicion.25
