While critics have brushed aside lam sing as the killer of authentic Mor lam traditions in the Isan region of northeastern Thailand, it can be argued that this new arrival of the modernized Mor lam genre epitomizes a creative transformation of traditional-modern music in the region. The purpose of this contemporary Mor lam variant has evolved from the musical re-telling of history, Buddhist teachings, literature, and traditional folk tales to pure entertainment featuring concert-style performances of hit pop songs and fan favorites. Reflecting the noise and tempo of modern life, lam sing has become a source of cultural agency for the young generation of Lao-speaking Isan people, especially migrant workers, to make sense of the modern global forces transforming their everyday life.
