While this review has primarily examined the effects
attributed to nicotine and its metabolites it should
be stated that other byproducts of cigarette smoke might
also have an influence on the progression of periodontitis.
It should also be noted that a significant genetic
component has been identified in relation to aggressive
periodontitis [13,68,72] and the combined interaction of
cigarette smoking and various genetic polymorphisms
might also contribute to disease status in young adults
