Major contributors of self-care: a population based study in north of Iran
Background: self- care is individuals empowering process to manage their condition including ailment and chronic diseases and more controlling on their lives. In total, self- care consisted of some performances such as prevention, maintenance and treatment of diseases implemented by person, then, current survey was executed to assess housewives point of views regarding self- care living in Gorgan.
Material and methods: a cross-sectional survey was done using random cluster sampling, 420 housewives who attended to health center were studied, in total. Instrument of the study was structured validated questionnaire. Data were finally analyzed by chi- square and Kruskal-Wallis test. Questionnaire was consisted of barriers, facilitator, knowledge, attitude, performance in terms of self- care and demographic characteristics, as well.
Results:
The mean age of samples was 33.07± 12.2 years (ranged 17 to 78 years). 8.1 % (n=34) of women were illiterate and 27% (n=113) were poorly educated, 46.7% (n= 195) and 18.2% (n=76) had diploma and academic degree, respectively. (80.5%, n= 338) were single and 15.7% (n=66) were married. Housewives, employed with fixed salary and unemployed formed 17% (n=71), 58% (n=244) and 25% (n=105), respectively. 49 % (n=206) of women had good Knowledge, 36.4% (n= 152) were inclined to self-care, positively. 21.8 % (n=92) were participated in self- care activities. Knowledge and attitude showed meaningful relationship regarding self-care (p= 0.0001, χ2= 8/235), moreover; there was also a significant relationship between knowledge and performance (p= 0.0001, χ2= 10/545).
Conclusion:
Sample's attitude and behavior must be modified and promoted using applicable and approved techniques such as motivation and in-depth interview. Self-care supporting approaches and strategies also must be regarded by institute and organization including health care and mass media organization to persuade people to do self-care activities.
