During the Second World War, as Hitler invaded countries, he also took their most famous works of art. Many of these eventually vanished and were never returned. The biggest mystery for art historians is the Amber room which was stolen from a town near St Petersburg(then Leningrad), in1941. The room was made completely of amber and belonged to Peter the Great. The Nazis took the whole room back to Germany but just before the end of the war it disappeared and has not been found since.
