Nonthaburi police are hunting an ethnic Shan construction worker suspected of robbing a gold shop in Bang Bua Thong district and fleeing with precious items worth 14 million baht. The burglary occurred early Sunday morning at a three storey-commercial building which houses Yaowarat Gold Shop on the first floor. Pol Col Preecha Macharoen, chief of Bang Bua Thong police station, said the stolen gold ornaments were kept in unprotected glass display cases. The thief climbed through the back of the building and broke in from a third-floor window in the front. The stolen gold items include 502 necklaces, 167 bracelets and 22 bangles weighing a combined 600 baht. Shop owner Chanyamonchu Yingsakul, 49, was sleeping in the building at the time. Pol Col Preecha said the thief had been identified as an ethnic Shan known as Chai, aged between 25 and 30. He was caught on security cameras at the shop and nearby areas before and during the burglary. The man was filmed before he covered his face with his T-shirt. Mr Chai is a construction worker who rented a room behind the gold shop. He disappeared after the incident. It was believed Mr Chai had several accomplices, Pol Col Preecha said.
