Nurse factors
It was found that the HHNs considered that they had
enough psychiatric nursing knowledge and skills, whereas
the PHNs did not. The quality of knowledge of PHNs has
been questioned previously, as most PHNs have had only 4
weeks of clinical psychiatric nursing practice before graduation
(Huang et al. 2008). In addition, most PHNs do not
like to do home-visiting because they worry about the
possible violent behaviour of clients. Our finding was supported
by the study of Björkman et al. (2008), which
showed that nursing staff in somatic care, to a greater
degree than nursing staff in mental health, reported a more
negative attitude with regards to people with schizophrenia,
considering them to be more unpredictable, more dangerous
and difficult to talk to. In Taiwan, HHNs receive
home-visiting payments from the NHI, which increase hospitals’
motivation to provide home care. This NHI policy is
good for people with schizophrenia who live in community
