We found that current smokers were at lower risk for
prehypertension, an observation documented in other studies
as well [13,14]. The reason for this association is unclear.
Interestingly, we observed that the hypertensive subjects in
our study populations who were on treatment, only 11%
were current smokers. Maybe this group had more healthier
life style. Or, hypertensive subjects who did not smoke than
those who did were more concerned about their health
themselves and were trend to come to hospitals for general
health examination
