The three target responses were trained in the same order for each child. During the baseline period a child was shown one of five desirable objects (e.g., stuffed animal) by the experimenter for 10 seconds. For the first target behavior, the “please”response, records were made of whether the child responded with “(ltem) ,please” when shown an object. Lf the child did not, the correct response was modeled and the next object shown. For the “thank- you” responses, each of the objects was handed one at a time to the child with the requirement that the child respond correctly within 10 seconds. Again, if the correct response was not made, the experimenter modeled the appropriate response. Finally, for the third behavior, the experimenter requested each of the objects which had been given to the child, said “thank you” upon receiving the object, and then required the child to respond “you’re welcome” within 10 seconds.
