Introduction
Perineal trauma during and after childbirth is associated with short and long term morbidity for women. It can results in urinary and faecal incontinence, painful intercourse, and persistent perineal pain . These problems are less likely in women whose perineum remains intact, the achievement of which has long been highly regarded., Perineal trauma, particularly from routine episiotomy, is painful, often considered unnecessary, and impacts on a woman's sexuality and self esteem. Strong evidence in support of restricting the use of episiotomy is now well established from systematic review of the randomised trials.
