Hazard assessment of sediments in freshwater ecosystems is
often conducted using chemical analyses and biological methods
such as toxicity tests (or other bioassays) and benthic community
inventories or a combination of the techniques often termed the
sediment quality triad. As several hundred
different compounds have been detected in landfill leachates a comprehensive chemical analysis would not only be difficult but also extremely expensive.
