Ahighly impure gas was created requiring a purifying procedure
involving various acid and base baths [25]. Due to the complexity
of this procedure, daily preparation of calibration standards
by dilution of pure N2O proved to be necessary. 20 mL headspace
vials were filled with distilled water and hermetically sealed with
magnetic PTFE/silicon septum, caps of 20 mm (i.d). Pure gas from
the certified N2O canister was transferred into the headspace vial
where a needle through the septum allowed removal of water
while the gas filled the vial according to the procedure previously
described by Varlet et al. [26]. Dilutions were carried out corresponding
to the following concentrations of N2O: 5.25, 10.50, 26.25,
52.50 and 105.00 nmol/mL of HS. The internal standard, H2S, was
also prepared daily at a concentration of 420 nmol/mL of HS. This
was achieved by dilution of the pure H2S which was extracted from
the gas cylinder following the same procedure described previously.
The calibration range has been suited to forensic applications
where low concentrations of N2O need to be identified.
A volume of 200 L of the internal standard was sampled into
the syringe. Sampling of calibration standards was performed using
the same syringe, preloaded with internal standard, allowing a
homogeneous gas mixture within the syringe. The total volume
was subsequently injected into the GC injector. Following the
same procedure, intermediate quality control samples equivalent
to 21.00, 36.75, 73.50 nmol of N2O/mL of HS were prepared daily
and analyzed. Regular and repetitive injections of the quality control
proved the validity of the method. When not in use, N2O and
H2S were kept at room temperature with H2S always under a fume
hood.
