COD removals in MFCs involve complex consequential microbial
metabolisms including fermentation, electroactive, and
methanogenesis (Li and Yu, 2011). MFC documented good substrate
degradation apart from power generation and C. vulgaris
played an important role in bioelectricity production (Fig. 2a). Only
about 15% of COD removal efficiency and 8 g COD L1 d1 of substrate
degradation rate (SDR) were observed at 144 h without inoculating
C. vulgaris.
