Intentional communities, relatively small groups who meet regularly for social and service oriented goals, were an important outlet for older adults in Bianchi's (2005) study. One woman who was a member of an intentional group that focused on the needs of abused women, as well as women in prisons, spoke of how meaningful the group was to her because it fostered an awareness of feminist issues and gave her a valuable sense of out- reach in the world. Intentional communities may be especially significant for older adults who are isolated and sense the need for meaningful h Connections within community groups.
