The eastern region of modern-day Thailand has had sea links with its external neighbors since late prehistoric times. These links continued on into the 11 and 12 centuries B.E. ( Buddhist era ), approximately 1,500 years ago. Thanks chiefly to its contacts with India, the region’s own indigenous culture took on a distinctly Indian character. Prosperous towns sprang up at roughly the same time as the Dvaravadi civilization, centered in the Chao Phraya River basin, and the great Khmer empire further to the east, Abundant archeological evidence found throughout the eastern region attests to this flourishing of culture in ancient times.
