in the current experiment,we obtained the natural frequency of a spring-mass system by using three different methods. In part 1, we measured the spring constant by using Hooke's law, and calculated the natural frequency by using formula that relates the natural frequency to mass and spring constant. In past 2, we measured the natural frequency directly counting the number of cycles completed during a given period. In part 3, we made a video recording of the motion of the spring-mass system, and we obtained the natural frequency by processing the images.
The values of the natural frequency varied depending on the method,as shown in the table that summarizes the result. In part 1,the length of extended spring was measured by reading a ruler held by hands, which was prone to error. In part 2, the number of cycles was counted by visually inspecting the motion, and the time interval was measured by using a methods used in the current experiment, therefore, the video-proceeding method seems to be least vulnerable to errors.
