This study does not evaluate the detailed meteorological assessment
of synoptic scale events but some preliminary appraisals are made. The
synoptic scale precipitation cycles may range from two to five week
periods, independent of any seasonal pattern. The meteorological
complexities associated with interactions between the Appalachian
Mountains, the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf Stream, various thermodynamic
parameters (e.g., temperature and moisture), intense convection, and
the region's latitude have a convoluted effect on synoptic scale precipitation
events in the Southeast.
General precipitation trends in the study area indicate that the high intensity
events occur more during the spring and summer months, while
the higher accumulation but low intensity storms appear to be more
prevalent in the winter months
