More open-ended questions are deliberately asked to pose much less ‘leading’
challenges and thus provide opportunities to develop more diverse cognitive
processing. The opportunity to also predict or respond to ‘what happens next’
provides the challenge of constructing sense out of what has happened so far. Asking
learners to predict can be a very powerful mediational strategy that invokes synthesis
and analytical processing of relevant information or data provided to project and
consider what could happen next.
