2. Materials and methods
Field measurements were carried out on a 2 6.20 2.50 m
model with concrete slab roofing and a cement board wall with 1
inch thick polyethylene foam as illustrated in Fig. 1. The concrete
slab roofing was divided into 3 equivalent areas (2 2 m) as
illustrated in Fig. 2. The experiment was set to compare the
temperature of the 3 different sets.
1. To study the effect of the soil on energy efficiency, different soil
thicknesses (0.10 and 0.20 m) and an exposed roof (concrete
slab) were compared.
2. To study the effect of the lawn on energy efficiency, 3 different
types of roof were set: exposed roof (concrete slab), roof with
0.1 m soil depth, and roof with 0.1 m soil with lawn (savanna
grass).
3. To study the effects of the grass type on energy efficiency,
comparisons were made between two types of grasses (manila grass and savanna grass) planted in 0.10msoil depth, and these
were in turn compared with the results of a bare roof.
